Can relational aesthetics embody a singular object? How about a chair? We sit in a chair to rest, we sit in a chair to travel, we sit in a chair to work, we sit in a chair to talk, the chair as it relates to the body is inherent but its is also embedded in the human experience. Kippenberger found inspiration for this piece in the unfinished novel Amerika by Franz Kafka where the protagonist enters a recruiting center where an interview takes place that is both real and surreal. This interaction, the interview, takes place in each table and two chair structure that Kippenberger sets up, not literally but the feeling of the interaction is there. Where Karl picks it up is have the interaction, put yourself in the piece, its about you not Kafka, your real and surreal. Both pieces are bound together by the formal arrangement of furniture, a form of sculpture that is understood and recognized by everyone. Furniture arrangements are encounter everyday by everyone this constant assessment imbues a level of taste and connoisseurship of furniture into the most casual viewer of art.

“In this challenging collection of fifteen essays, most of which originally appeared in October, Rosalind Krauss explores the ways in which the break in style that produced postmodernism has forced a change in our various understandings of twentieth-century art, beginning with the almost mythic idea of the avant-garde.”

Peanut Butter Licking Asshole
This drawing came about while doing readings on the use of indexical marks. It was particularly influenced by Roslind Krauss’ “Notes on the Index: 1 and 2.”
